What people ask before they call

What does Yellow Rose Landscaping do?

Yellow Rose Landscaping is a design-build landscaping company based in Powell, Tennessee, serving Knoxville and surrounding communities. We design and build hardscapes and full backyard transformations, including paver patios, retaining and seating walls, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, pool decks and landscape lighting, and we also handle planting, lawn care, tree care and commercial grounds.

Who runs Yellow Rose Landscaping?

Owner Scott Black, a native Texan who named the company for his late grandfather, Dr. Paul F. Mackey, Jr.. The 12-person team has completed 200+ projects for 150+ clients and holds a 5.0 rating across 39 Google reviews.

How much does a backyard transformation cost in Knoxville?

Most full transformations run $30k–$150k+, depending on size, slope and features. Single features cost less: paver patios typically run $18–$30 per sq ft, and a built-in stone fire pit $3.5k–$8k. Every quote follows a free on-site consult and a design.

Why design before you build?

Changes are cheap on paper and expensive in the dirt. Every project starts with a concept plan and 3D renderings, so you approve the finished yard, materials and budget before we break ground. That’s how we avoid costly change orders mid-build.

Paver Patios & Walkways

A paver patio is an outdoor floor of interlocking concrete or natural stone set on a compacted gravel base. Built right, it drains, stays level and lasts for decades.

Best for: Replacing a cracked slab, expanding a small builder patio, or creating a level pad on a sloped yard.

What’s included
  • Excavation and haul-off
  • Compacted gravel base sized for clay soil
  • Pavers or flagstone set in your pattern
  • Borders, edge restraint and polymeric sand
  • Walkways and steps tied into the patio
Typical timeline
3–7 days for most patios
Typical investment*
$18–$30 per sq ft installed

Retaining & Seating Walls

Retaining walls hold back soil to turn a slope into usable, level ground; seating walls are bench-height walls built around patios and fire pits. Both depend on drainage and base work more than the block you see.

Best for: Sloped lots, eroding banks, failing timber walls, and patios that need built-in seating.

What’s included
  • Excavation and compacted base
  • Drain pipe and gravel backfill
  • Geogrid reinforcement where needed
  • Caps and seating-height walls
  • Engineering coordination for tall walls
Typical timeline
3–10 days depending on height and length

Outdoor Kitchens

An outdoor kitchen is a built-in cooking and gathering station: usually a stone-clad island with a grill, counters, storage and bar seating, often under a pergola and connected to gas, water and power.

Best for: Families who cook out every week and want the party outside instead of crowded in the kitchen.

What’s included
  • Layout and appliance planning
  • Block island with stone veneer
  • Granite or concrete countertops
  • Built-in grill, burners, fridge and storage
  • Gas, electrical and water coordination
Typical timeline

Fire Pits & Fire Features

A built-in fire pit is a permanent stone or block fire feature, wood-burning or gas, set into a patio and often ringed by a seating wall. It’s the feature families use most.

Best for: Getting everyone outside after dark, most months of the year.

What’s included
  • Sizing and placement
  • Wood-burning or gas options
  • Fire-rated liner and cap
  • Seating walls and a flagstone or paver surround
  • Outdoor fireplaces for a bigger statement
Typical timeline
2–5 days; longer with a seating-wall patio

$3.5k–$8k built-in; $15k+ with seating wall and patio

Pool Decks & Surrounds

A pool deck is the hardscape around a pool: coping, decking and lounge space, built to stay cool underfoot, shed water away from the pool and resist slipping.

Best for: New pools, cracked concrete decks, and pools that need a real place to lounge.

What’s included
  • Coping and deck layout
  • Travertine, paver or flagstone decking
  • Drainage away from the pool
  • Lounge and shade areas
  • Poolside plantings and lighting
Typical timeline
1–2 weeks, coordinated with your pool contractor
Typical investment*
$18–$32 per sq ft

Landscape Lighting

Landscape lighting is a low-voltage LED system of path lights, uplights and step and wall lights that makes your yard safe, usable and beautiful after dark.

Best for: Anyone who loves their yard but mostly sees it after work.

What’s included
  • Night design walk-through
  • Path, step and wall lighting
  • Uplighting for trees and architecture
  • Transformer, timer and app control
  • Warm, low-glare fixtures

FAQ

Frequently asked

Is the design consult really free?

Yes. Scott walks your property with you at no cost and with no obligation.

Why do you design before you build?

Because the expensive surprises happen mid-build. Designing first means you approve the layout, materials and budget on paper, and that’s how we avoid costly change orders halfway through.

How soon can you start?

Design takes a few weeks and builds are scheduled by season. Fall and early spring book up first, so the sooner you consult, the sooner you’re in the ground.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Yellow Rose Landscaping, LLC is licensed and insured.

Do you fix drainage problems?

Yes. Most drainage problems here come from clay soil and poor grading. We fix them with regrading, drain pipe, dry creek beds and proper base work under every hardscape.

Can you work with my HOA?

Yes. We prepare plans, material specs and renderings for HOA design review.

Do you offer commercial services?

Yes. We build seasonal plans for HOAs, retail centers and offices, run them on a reliable schedule, and document every visit.

What areas do you serve?

We’re based in Powell and serve Knoxville and surrounding communities, including Halls, Fountain City, Karns, Hardin Valley, West Knoxville, Bearden, Sequoyah Hills, Northshore, Farragut, Oak Ridge and Clinton.
